Daughter of Zion’s New Single Addresses Teen Suicide
Suicide still remains a leading cause of death for youth ages 15 to 24

 By: LadyLight
Today Minister Trina ‘Simone’ Bryant  also known as Daughter of Zion officially releases her new single Prodigal Child. It is the first official release from her new project, Livin By My Faith, which is scheduled to debut October 2013.

The release of the single’s music video will premiere on World Suicide Prevention Day September 10, 2013. The release of the single and video are strategically designed to coincide with National Suicide Prevention Month which is in September.

“Suicide can affect anyone. It does not matter your age, race, gender or religion. Sometimes we think that suicide is only happening to those who we label as hard to deal with or un-churched, but it isn’t. It can affect anyone! So we are gearing up to bring more awareness to our communities about this issue and to let those, who are dealing with suicidal tendencies, know that there is hope.” said Daughter of Zion.

The song and music video focus on teen scenarios, such as bullying, that can lead to a sense of depression, hopelessness, and loneliness. Suicide remains one of the top 3 leading causes of death for young people between the ages of 15 to 24.  Statistics also show that 1 person completes suicide every 14 minutes leaving approximately 5 million Americans directly affected by a suicide.

Throughout the month Daughter of Zion will use her single’s release as a way to  exhort, equip, and empower the body of Christ in addressing a topic that often carries a stigma and is rarely talked about openly. This year’s World Suicide Prevention theme is: Stigma A Major Barrier to Suicide Prevention.

Daughter of Zion’s Facebook page will not only include her new single and music video, but it will also become a platform of resources concerning suicide prevention. “Often times the signs for suicide can go unnoticed in our society. We are providing professional resources that will help identify the warning signs and tips on how to help a person who may be contemplating suicide.” said Daughter of Zion.

On the page fans and supporters can find the suicide hotline number, support for families who have lost someone to suicide, information about the warning signs, encouragement, and helpful links. The resource page will also debut on Tuesday September 10, 2013 World Suicide Prevention Day and will be located at: www.facebook.com/livingbymyfaith.

Lady Light's "on-the-scene-DFW-connection"

Sunday, April 6, Ladylight Spotlight's "on-the-scene-connection" in Dallas attended  a panel discussion, IMPACTING YOUTH, presented by Art House Dallas and FilmMatters, in partnership with the Dallas International Film Festival.

The panel discussed how Filmmakers can responsibly and effectively message and communicate to youth using the power of film and media with a special emphasis on peer created content.

The moderator was Keith Maitland, director and producer of Emmy nominated THE EYES OF ME. Panelists were: Sharon Amezcua, involved with creating Juntobox Films, a collaborative film studio that unites social development with traditional film production; Leslie Ferrell, president of Big Idea Entertainment, a children's media company that produces "Veggie Tales," and Trevor Hall, president, Creative Visions Foundation.

Amezcua is very excited to have a platform that creates a community for youth to develop industry and social tools and knowledge to collaborate artistically with experienced industry mentors.

Ferrell's company focuses on content that assists parenting needs coupled with a message about faith. The content provided creates nuggets  for children to walk away with which helps build character and knowledge . She also said that market research has shown that children as young as two years old can learn to demonstrate behaviors of gratitude.

That's good news for parents struggling with the terrible twos and threes. They really get it, even if they don't act like it.

Hall was very optimistic about our Millenium generation. He said they get a bad reputation about being addicted to technology, having a short attention span but he believes that this generation's the most generous and compassionate about world and social concerns.

I was really impressed with Hall's answer to Maitland's question about which movie impacted their lives  to motivate them to be come a filmmaker. Hall said, Boys in the Hood. ( I was like--Whaaat?!)

Hall grew up in south side Chicago. He lived in a neighborhood that was only a block or one street divided between him and the Cabrini Green housing projects ( For those that don't know - that was the housing project they show in Good Times ,ya'll).
He was told growing up to never, ever cross that "imaginary barrier" because "they're not like us." After watching Boys in the Hood, he said that it closed the divide of the us vs. them, for him.

And proof of that impact today is Hall's Creative Visions Foundation. It uses media and the arts to create meaningful change in the world. CVF has provided fiscal sponsorship, mentorship, inspiration, fundraising, connectivity and more.

This panel discussion confirmed my belief  that under resourced and affluent children can watch or create quality TV, shorts, full-featured films and documentaries that can help us facilitate dialogue with our youth to engage in or to expand on meaningful art and education to create and act on community and global change.

THE SXSW RECAP RAPPER STRIKES AGAIN!!!

BY: LADYLIGHT

This year’s SXSW Interactive kicked off again with one its most innovative players, SaulPaul. For the last 4 years SaulPaul has provided conference attendees with memorable reviews of keynote speakers through rap and freestyle rap at that!

The process is as unique and creative as the rapper himself.  First he listens to the presentation.  Then it’s off to an unsuspecting spot,  where he produces a beat, sets up the mic, freestyles the review, and finalizes the production. Once completed, it’s uploaded to the internet for the entire world to hear.

Over the years, SaulPaul has partnered with various corporate sponsors, including local sponsor Affordable Sounds. Last year’s partner, Prezi, added an additional element that provided visuals to each recap creating an experience for the viewer that was entirely new and unprecedented.

The rapper and his company, ReRoute, have always embodied the concept of innovative interaction.  In 2010 he released Tower to Tower: Special Edition, as both a documentary and a soundtrack. He toured Tower to Tower in over 30 cities. He became known as an artist with a message who could create a “live freestyle” concert experience through creating new songs on the spot with audience members.

SaulPaul continues to interact with listeners even beyond the SXSW Interactive Conference with his new Dream in 3-D tour, based on his current book Dream in 3-D, which is a book of inspiration for anyone who dares to dream.

You can catch all of SaulPaul’s recaps at:

ALL THIS MONTH CELEBRATING LOVE!

Family Does Matter

By Carol Price-Williams
There's a cynical saying that most of us would agree with; you can choose your friends but you can't choose your family. But Pastor Patrick E. Winfield Jr. has an optimistic answer to that observation - there's hope.
T.D. Jakes, pastor of the 30,000-member Potter’s House in Dallas launched its Fort Worth campus three years ago. January 13, 2013 was the grand opening. Pastor Winfield said the goal of the Ft. Worth campus is to revitalize the Woodhaven area, which is afflicted with high crime rates, by being an active part of the community and contributing solutions.
Through his twenty-one years of experience in ministry and education, Pastor Winfield recognized a significant need for the church to actively engage in supplying and supporting useful tools and skills to access, develop and maintain a healthy "modern" family dynamic.

Pastor Winfield led the Potter's House of Ft. Worth in hosting a Family Enrichment Conference - The 'Christian' Modern Family (Oct. 18 - 20, 2013) with the goal of strengthening and reclaiming one of our nations’ most fragile institutions—families. But, this was not your 1950's Father Knows

Best or Leave it to Beaver kinda family conference. Participants gained practical tools needed to survive and thrive in our modern complex society. From conversations with married couples, singles and youth, the conference addressed subjects including sex and blended families all from a faith-based yet realistic and transparent perspective.
For example, I was fortunate to sit and listen to Sarah Jakes' session for singles ,Colliding With Destiny (also the title of her book which is to be released April 1, 2014...more about that in Part 2). I was surprised how open and honest she was about her journey from shame and isolation as a fourteen year old pregnant daughter of a prominent minister to becoming a confident self-loving independent young lady. Sarah got her inspiration from Ruth… but again I'll write about this more in part 2, but I just want to say...I was inspired.
I asked Pastor Winfield what he wanted the general audience to take away from this conference and he said, "I want the participants to have a deeper and greater understanding of the definition and purpose of the family and why it exits. There is a purpose in God bringing families together. The first institution God ever created was not the church but the family. From strong families come stronger communities, stronger school systems and stronger societies. If one cornerstone is broken, if the family is broken..., so are all the other institutions".
Pastor Winfield believes that we are called to be and to show the image of God's expression of love, relationships, duty, commitment and covenant in the earth. He categorizes these images as being a wife, a husband, a man, a woman, single, married and as a child/youth. Everyone has a purpose and responsibility to live up to that purpose according to the will and grace of God.
 Stay tuned for more...
